This has to be one of the most iconic names in the Hot Hatch world! First debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1975 the Mk1 was fitted with a 4 speed manual gearbox, 4 cylinder engine that made 62mph in 10 seconds and had a top speed of 113mph! Some 49 years later we now have 7 speed DSG gearbox, 241bhp, 62mph in 6 seconds and a top speed of 154mph! Normally a brand will discontinue a model but not VW, they broke the mould with this one and we now approach 50 years in the making and 8 different generations. That is something VW can be proud off!
